On today's edition of Canadian IP Thought Leaders, Jon Arnold spoke with Alec Saunders and Howard Thaw. They are fresh back from Demo, where their company, Iotum, came away with the highest-rated award - Demo God. Iotum is an Ottawa-based startup, and Demo is the premier showcase for new technologies in the US. It's a great story, and speaks so well to a Canadian success story in the global communicaitons market.

Alec Saunders, CEO

Alec Saunders is a visionary technology evangelist who brings 15 years of leadership in technology marketing and product management to Iotum. During his nine years at Microsoft Corporation Alec launched Internet Explorer, and created and launched the Microsoft Plus! Windows companion, which earned more than $100 million in sales during its first year. As Director of Marketing for Microsoft's Home Network initiative, Alec was responsible for launching and recruiting more than 300 vendors to Microsoft's Universal Plug and Play industry working group. While at Microsoft’s Canadian operation from 1992 to 1994, Alec increased market share of Microsoft’s developer tools from 29% to over 75% in the Canadian market, and launched the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade in Canada, using radical channel recruiting tactics to deliver results better than every other major Microsoft subsidiary worldwide. In 1993, while at Microsoft, he also created the first known commercial opt-in mailing lists on the Internet, and pioneered the use of direct-email as an e-commerce vehicle.

Dr Howard Thaw, COO

Howard Thaw is a serial entrapreneur and results-driven Executive with more than 25 years of multi-disciplinary technology and knowledge-based industry perspective, bridging experiences in both the private and public spheres. Following a distinguished career in Medical Research and later Computer Security, Howard emerged as the founder and visionary behind TCT-ThunderByte, the first anti-virus software company to integrate heuristic virus scanning, detection and noticfication into modern day e-mail. He was also the creative mastermind behind the award-winning DataSafe encryption software, recognized by Windows magazine as the Encryption Product of the Year -- and, which eventually led his company to be acquired by California-based NovaStor Corporation. Since then, Howard has been selectively working with emerging technology companies, their directors, advisors and investors in the Americas and Europe.
