Jon Arnold / Erik Lagerway

On this week's edition of the Canadian IP Thought Leaders series, Jon Arnold spoke with Erik Lagerway, who recently joined fast-growing Shift Networks as their CTO. Both are fresh back from Spring VON, and did a wrapup of the conference on the podcast. Erik talked about his impressions from meeting many vendors as well as what stood out from the exhibit hall. Before coming to Shift he Co-founded Xten (now Counterpath) and served as the President and COO for nearly 3 years. Erik designed Xten's business class softphone products and go-to-market strategies for company. He was instrumental in growing Xten from 3 to 40+ people and bringing the company from conception/zero revenue to more than 3 Million in sales on award-winning product in less than 2 years. Xten customers acquired during Erik's stay include Yahoo!, Vonage, Deutsche Telekom and numerous other carriers, OEMs, and Portals. Erik's understanding of the VoIP industry and his ability to uncover opportunities in the market provided Xten with the perceived lead in the industry for SIP softphones and contributed greatly to Xten winning 6 industry awards.

VON Italy and VON Mexico

While on site at Spring VON 2006, we were joined by some of the organizers of our future VON Conferences.

Gianluigi Ferri of Wireless s.r.l. discussed VON Italy which takes place in October of 2006. In accordance with the international format of VON, this event, held in Rome, will host all the major players of the telecommunication sector, from fixed, wireless and broadband service providers.

Marcela Altamirano of E.J. Krause acknowledged the success of VON Mexico 2006. VON Mexico took place in association with Expocom, which is the largest IT show in Mexico. The conference was attended by a great mix of local Enterprise customers and Latin American carriers.
VON returns to Mexico City in February 2007.

Ian Bell is a 12-year veteran of the IP communications industry. Jeff Pulver and Jeremy Allaire Press Conference at VON, Part 1

Jon Arnold / Bogdan Materna

On today's Canadian IP Thought Leaders podcast, Jon spoke with Bogdan Materna, CTO of VoIPShield, an Ottawa-based startup focused on VoIP security. Bogdan provides an overview as to why VoIP security is so important, as well as how the market lacks a basic understanding of this, especially in the enterprise market. Aside from discussing various approaches to educating the market, Bodgan also touched on some of the technical challenges of integrating a VoIP security solution into a carrier's network. Jeff Pulver / Steve Smith - Lavalife

Jeff Pulver sat down and had a chat with Steve Smith, Chief Scientist at Lavalife, about the state of IP communications as they pertain to things like online dating and gaming, and where they might head next.

Steve is Chief Scientist of Lavalife, a leader in consumer dating applications with internet, telephone, and mobile products. His role is to research and integrate advanced IP communication technologies into the company's consumer products and ITsystems. He blogs about IP communications as “Steve’s Tech Journal”, and is an active advocate for a light regulatory touch on VoIP and IP Communications. Steve serves on the board of the Global IP Alliance.

Steve advises a number of high technology startups on IP Communication strategies and web 2.0 technologies. He holds a BS Computer Science from Cornell University, and in his early career founded Ampersand, Inc., a system engineering firm. He lives in Carlisle, MA.

Jon Arnold / Matt Stein

On today's Canadian IP Thought Leaders podcast, Jon spoke with Matt Stein, VP of New Technologies and Services with Primus Canada. Jon and Matt talked about the state of residential VoIP in Canada, and how consumers are using these services. Primus Canada was the first to offer residential VoIP in Canada just over two years ago, so Matt provides a solid perspective on the realities of providing a competitive service and how consumer demand is evolving. Matt will be speaking at Spring VON next week as well as VON Canada in early April.

Matt Stein joined Primus in early 2003 with the mandate to define and build new and innovative products for both the Commercial and Residential markets. At Primus, he is responsible for product development as well as technology and services strategy. Matt served as both Chief Architect and overall prime for the TalkBroadband residential VoIP product launch. He brings a wealth of experience in information technology and management in the areas of Internet infrastructure, security, networking, and enterprise applications. Prior to his role with Primus, Mr. Stein was Chief Technology Officer at Sprint Canada, in the application service provider division, Ascenda, where he spearheaded the organization's delivery of technology.

Dave brings to Edgewater more than 14 years of experience with networking technologies in a variety of marketing, sales and customer support roles. Most recently, Mr. Martin was the Director of Marketing for Andes Networks responsible for outbound marketing and business development. Prior to Andes Mr. Martin was the Vice President of Product Management at Nokia IPRG, where he was responsible for product strategy and outbound marketing of the Nokia/Checkpoint security appliance product family. In this role, he helped grow the product line from a single platform to a diverse product family of firewall and VPN products that led the business unit in revenue. He came to Nokia through its acquisition of Ipsilon Networks in January of 1998. As the Director of Product Management at Ipsilon, Mr. Martin was charged with transitioning Ipsilon’s products from the pure routing space into new networking security markets. While at Ipsilon, he also served as the Director of Worldwide Technical Services. In this capacity, he handled the development and delivery of pre and post sales customer support. Mr. Martin began his career at Newbridge Networks holding a variety of technical and managerial roles in support of Newbridge’s TDM, ATM, Frame Relay, NMS and routing products.
