Jon Arnold / Ray Vilis
On today's edition of Canadian IP Thought Leaders, Jon spoke with Ray Vilis, VP of Business Development at Versatel Networks. Ottawa is home to many leading IP companies, and Versatel is a good example of this. They are seeing promising opportunities in helping IM platforms develop sticky voice applications, especially in the areas of conferencing and social collaboration. Ray talked about the culture and realities of IM platform companies in terms of being prospective customers, and how this differs from the way traditional telcos making buying decisions. He also provided some interesting examples of the voice applications their technology is enabling.
Mr Vilis has been an active participant in the evolution of the telecommunications industry over the last 30 years. From his initial days at Bell Northern Research and Nortel, he established a proven track record in the definition and delivery of large, innovative, profitable, development projects which included Packet data networks, PSTN voice services, IP solutions (Magellan Passport), Automated Speech Recognition technology, data networks, and more recently VoIP/VoIM services. Moving between Product Management, Product Development and System Engineering roles; and managing teams from 10 to 250 individuals, spread over three continents, provided Mr. Vilis the opportunity to gain a global perspective on the communications industry. In his current role at Versatel Networks Mr Vilis continues to push for the edge on communication services through the definition/deployment of new revenue generating services.
