Jon Arnold / Sean Wise

On today's podcast, Jon spoke with Sean Wise of Wise Mentor Capital. Sean works very closely with startups and is very active in the mentoring and funding of new businesses. He is well regarded, not just in Toronto but across Canada and the U.S. as a thought leader in this area, and Sean shared his perspectives with Jon. He provides an insightful overview of the trends he's seeing in how companies are getting funding, and the differences between U.S. and Canadian funds. To close out, he emphasized key success factors for startups looking for money, and among them, the importance of getting proper referrals to get the attention of prospective investors.


Sean Wise, BA, LLB, MBA

Sean Wise is one of Canada’s leading experts on raising Venture Capital. According to the September issue of Profit magazine, he is one of the country's leading mentors for emerging growth companies.
Over the last 6 years, he has lectured at more than 70 Bootcamps, financing forums and industry conferences. He has trained dozens of CEOs who collectively raised more than $800M from a wide variety of investment sources.

Sean brings 5 years of professional services and 15+ years of entrepreneurial services, having helped found 5 ventures of his own to date, the first at age 16.

Sean helped found Ernst & Young’s Venture Capital Advisory Group in Canada and now undertakes selective engagements from young tech companies looking for strategic guidance on capital raising and growth through Wise Mentor Capital (WMC).


In addition, he acts as an advisor to several seed funds including the BC Advantage Funds, who have officially named him a mentor to their portfolio. Sean also sits on the boards of several young technology companies, as well as on the board of the Toronto Venture Group. He is the Chair of the 2005 Canadian Venture Forum selection committee and a member of both the Canadian Venture Capital Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
