Jon Arnold / Jim Van Meggelen
On this edition of the Canadian IP Thought Leaders series, Jon spoke with Jim Van Meggelen, of Toronto-based Core Telecom Innovations. Jim is actively involved in the Asterisk community and is one of Canada's leading figures moving Open Source forward. Jim and Jon focused on how Open Source is becoming a bona fide alternative to traditional telephony solutions in the business market, and how active Toronto is in the Open Source developer community. Jim duly noted how the Toronto Asterisk User Group is the largest Asterisk group in North America, and probably the world. They also discussed the good work of another Canadian company, Iotum, and how they have developed a plug-in version of their Relevance Engine to enhance the Asterisk platform. Finally, Jim and Jon noted the best-selling book that Jim co-authored, Asterisk, The Future of Telephony, which Jon cited as a valuable primer for anyone wanting to learn more about this topic.
Jim Van Meggelen is President and CTO of Core Telecom Innovations Inc., a Canadian-based provider of open-source telephony solutions. He has over fifteen years of enterprise telecom experience with TTS, Nortel, Williams, Telus and Core Telecom, and has has extensive knowledge of both legacy and VoIP equipment.
Jim was the architect of two of the world's largest managed enterprise voice networks; each solution serving roughly twenty-thousand users in more than one-thousand communities across Canada, providing telecommunications in five different languages, through six time zones, administered completely from a central location. These networks pioneered the use of extensive automation and database control in a branch voice network - functionalities not generally available in proprietary telecommunications systems. Jim has now moved on from the world of proprietary telecom, and is commited to open-source telephony.
Jim is one of the authors of O'Reilly's Asterisk: The Future of Telephony, and is currently working on the Asterisk Cookbook, also for O'Reilly.
