Carl Ford - Lincoln Lavoie - Steve Edwards - Live at Fall VON
Carl Ford sat down with Lincoln Lavoie, Senior Engineer, and Manager of the VoIP Consortium for the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), and Steve Edwards, Chief Marketing Officer for Sonus. The topic of discussion was this press release about the new ways these organizations are working together.
Lincoln Lavoie began working for the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) in the early spring of 2000, with the asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) consortium. Lincoln has worked to develop and improve the testing methods and implementations for ADSL and other related technologies. This work includes the development of custom hardware and software tools to actively monitor and decode the electrical signals present on DSL lines. These tools have allowed the ADSL consortium to develop conformance testing for the handshake and initialization procedures of ADSL transceivers. Lincoln has also developed new methods for power spectrum measurements on active ADSL lines. These new methods were presented to the DSL Form Testing and Interoperability Workgroup, where Lincoln has actively participated since 2002. Currently, Lincoln is involved with the up and coming VDSL2 technologies and manages the voice over IP (VoIP) consortium at the UNH-IOL.
As chief marketing officer (CMO), Steve Edwards is responsible for Sonus Networks' global marketing, product management and business alliances activities. Prior to joining Sonus, Edwards was most recently an executive officer at AT&T. As the vice president of indirect sales and strategic alliances, he was responsible for over 1200 channel partners, AT&T's strategic alliance and partner program and overall responsibility for the distribution strategy supporting AT&T Business, a $17 billion operation. Previously, Edwards spent four years at Concert (a global joint venture company) where he held the positions of chief operating officer (COO) for global services and vice president of service delivery responsible for marketing and delivering voice and data services in over 50 countries via regional service providers. Prior to joining Concert in 1998, as president of BT Visual Images, Edwards led the videoconferencing company through a successful IPO and ultimate acquisition by Tandberg ASA, a Norwegian technology company. Edwards spent 17 years with British Telecommunications (BT) in the UK and held various positions in product management, marketing, R&D and as general manager of BT Videoconferencing. Edwards holds an honors degree in electronic and computer systems engineering from Loughborough University of Technology.

Eric Herneaz, Solegy - Live at Fall VON
Paul sat down with Eric Herneaz, the CEO of Solegy.
Solegy offers a managed platform that allows network operators, service providers and content developers to achieve their business objectives more effectively. We do this by creating unique, forward-thinking software that solves real problems, and providing it with the industry-leading expertise that comes only with years of practical experience.
The Solegy platform, called ServicePDQ, solves the universal need to realize competitive differentiation quickly, cost effectively, and in a way that anticipates a continuing evolution of next generation networks.
More than ever, end users expect a combination of services and content to be delivered across multiple technologies, often involving many partners in the value chain. These and other market trends are driving industry participants to introduce new services, enhance the user experience and reduce operating costs.
In this context, ServicePDQ addresses the three key pain points felt by all operators: integrating disparate systems, managing third-party content and relationships, and creating a compelling customer proposition.
By integrating solutions for VoIP, content distribution and intelligent session management with standards-based telecommunications middleware, ServicePDQ makes the overall processes of launching new services and applications easier. The result is unprecedented openness and flexibility, lower total cost of ownership, quicker time-to-market, and reduced risk from managing a rapidly-evolving set of technologies.

Mark Spencer shows off Digium Asterisk Appliance at VON
Paul Kapustka sat down with Mark Spencer of Digium at VON to check out the new Digium Asterisk Appliance. Released with a Developer's Kit, this compact Asterisk PBX implementation remains true to Digium's open source roots. Read more information here.
Mark Spencer founded Linux Support Services in 1999 while still a Computer Engineering student at Auburn University. When faced with the high cost of buying a PBX, Mark simply used his Linux PC and knowledge of C code to write his own! This was the beginning of the world-wide phenomenon known as Asterisk, the open source PBX, and caused Mark to shift his business focus from Linux support to supporting Asterisk and opening up the telecom market. Linux Support Services is now known as Digium, and is bringing open source to the telecom market while gaining a foothold in the telecom industry.
Mark strongly believes that every technology he creates should be given back to the community. This is why Asterisk is fully open source. Today that model has allowed Asterisk to remain available free of charge, while it has become as robust as the leading and most-expensive PBXs.
The Asterisk community has ambassadors and contributors from every corner of the globe.
Mark Spencer holds a degree in Computer Engineering from Auburn University, and is now president of Digium, Inc. He has also led the creation of several Linux-based open source applications, most notably Asterisk, the Open Source PBX, and Gaim Instant Messenger.

Congressman Ed Markey Live at Fall VON
This is Congressman Markey's address at Fall VON.
Edward J. Markey has constructed an extraordinary legislative record since his first election to the United States Congress in 1976. As the highest Ranking Democrat on the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, he has shaped more than 20 years of telecommunications policy while continuing to champion consumer rights, health reform and disease prevention, the elimination of large monopolies, the conservation of environmental resources and the reduction of nuclear threats.
Competition remains Rep. Markey's economic mantra–in his words, "ruthless Darwinian competition that would bring a smile to Adam Smith." Accordingly, he has been instrumental in breaking up anti-consumer, anti-innovative monopolies in electricity, long-distance and local telephone service, cable television, and international satellite services. He was one of the only members of the Commerce Committee to fight AT&T's monopoly in the early 80s and is a principal author of the requirement that the Bell Operating companies accept local telephone service in the 90s. His pro-competition policies have directly benefited job creation in Eastern Massachusetts and throughout the country.
In the 108th Congress, Rep. Markey remains very active on telecommunications issues, working to protect children on-line, to penalize unsolicited "spam" emails, to establish a Do-Not-Call list for telephone users, and to prevent the listing of cell phone numbers without the subscribers consent. Moreover, he is leading the House effort to preserve the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as wilderness and to protect the air of New England against pollution from industrial smokestacks.
Ed Markey was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1946. He attended Boston College (B.A., 1968) and Boston College Law School (J.D., 1972). He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was elected to the Massachusetts State House where he served two terms representing Malden and Melrose.
